# MCP

Add https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp in Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Cursor, and any other MCP client.

The hosted server is `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`. Protocol `2025-03-26`. Methods: `initialize`, `tools/list`, `tools/call`.

Two ways in:

- Sign-in, for a chat window or a desktop app. The client discovers `https://api.gnesi.io/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource` and opens `https://gnesi.io/connect`. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect. The same window returns to the app. No pasted secret.
- Bearer, for a client that cannot finish that sign-in. Settings, Agent access. Header `Authorization: Bearer`. A header named `x-api-key` is the wrong header on this server.

A missing token on `tools/list` or `tools/call` is `401` with `WWW-Authenticate` pointing at the protected-resource URL. `initialize` and `ping` stay open.

This is a custom connector. Search in Claude's or ChatGPT's directory will not find Gnesi. The URL is always `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`.

## Claude on the web

This is a custom connector. It is not a listing in Claude's directory.

Open this link. It prefills the name and the URL. Review them, then continue:

[Add Gnesi in Claude](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=Gnesi&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.gnesi.io%2Fapi%2Fmcp)

Or do it from the menus:

1. Open Claude and go to Customize, then Connectors.
2. Choose Add, then Add custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan an owner adds it from Organization settings, Connectors, Add, Custom, Web.
3. Name it Gnesi. URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`. Continue.
4. Keep the detected authentication. Choose Sign in now.
5. For the OAuth client, choose Register automatically. That stores the return address Gnesi will accept.
6. Add. The Gnesi page opens. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect.
7. Claude opens again. Ask "List my Gnesi conversations."

## Claude Desktop

The desktop app uses the same connector screen.

1. Open Claude Desktop and go to Customize, then Connectors.
2. Choose Add, then Add custom connector.
3. Name it Gnesi. URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`.
4. Choose Sign in now, and Register automatically for the OAuth client.
5. Add. The app opens `https://gnesi.io/connect` in the browser.
6. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect. The browser returns to Claude Desktop.
7. Ask "List my Gnesi conversations."

Claude Code is a separate install. See [CLI](/integrations/cli).

## ChatGPT on the web

This is a custom connector. Search in the app directory will not find Gnesi. The menu says Plugins on current workspace plans, and Apps on others.

1. Open ChatGPT and go to Plugins. If you do not see Plugins, open Settings, then Apps.
2. Choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. If the menu says Create, use that.
3. Name it Gnesi. URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`.
4. Set authentication to sign-in. Do not paste an agent credential.
5. Create the connector. The Gnesi page opens.
6. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect.
7. ChatGPT opens again. Ask "List my Gnesi conversations."

ChatGPT may ask you to confirm a send before it runs. New mail is covered on [MCP events](/integrations/mcp-events).

## ChatGPT desktop app

1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app.
2. Open Settings, then MCP servers. If that row is missing, use Plugins, then the manage control next to Installed.
3. Add a server. Name it Gnesi. Choose Streamable HTTP.
4. URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`. Save.
5. Authenticate when the app asks. The Gnesi page opens in the browser.
6. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect. The browser returns to the desktop app.

## Grok on the web

1. Open Grok and go to Settings, then Connectors.
2. Add a custom connector. Name it Gnesi.
3. URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`.
4. Connect. The Gnesi page opens.
5. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect.
6. Grok opens again. Ask "List my Gnesi conversations."

## Grok app

1. Open the Grok app and go to Settings, then Connectors.
2. Add a custom connector with the same name and URL.
3. Connect. The app opens the Gnesi page in the browser.
4. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect. The browser returns to the app.

The Grok CLI and the Grok API use the bearer credential. See [Grok](/integrations/grok).

## Cursor

1. Open Cursor Settings, then MCP.
2. Add a server named Gnesi with the URL `https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp`. Leave the header off.
3. Connect. Cursor opens the Gnesi page.
4. Create an account or sign in, then slide to connect. Cursor returns through `cursor://`.

A terminal-style install can still send the agent credential:

```json
{
  "gnesi": {
    "url": "https://api.gnesi.io/api/mcp",
    "headers": {
      "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_CREDENTIAL"
    }
  }
}
```

## Other MCP clients

Use the same URL. If the client can sign you in, leave the credential out. If it asks for a header, send `Authorization: Bearer` and the agent credential.

Windsurf and any client with a headers field follow the Cursor block. Codex takes the same URL in its MCP settings.

## Tools

The server returns the live list from `tools/list`. The names and arguments are on [MCP](/api/mcp). Older names that say `task` still work. New clients use the conversation names.

An agent credential that reads a conversation does not receive the body of a message Shield is holding. The `shield` object is still on the message. `gnesi_release_shield` is refused for an agent credential.
